The Birth of Èrainn
Captain of the Catellina
Estevam Nunez is a Portuguese navigator of great fame and mystery. He served in the Portuguese Navy from the age of eleven, rising to the rank of Second Mate before returning to his father’s home in Lisbon. Nunez disappeared for seven years, returning to the sea when he was thirty years of age. At this point, Nunez purchased the Catellina, crewed her, outfitted her, and embarked upon merchant trading in the Mediterranean. Nunez had always been noted for astute navigation, but his accuracy in this art began to gain international fame once he became an owning captain. Nunez was able to navigate to any port in any weather. He bypassed raiders by sailing far out to sea, even out of sight of the land for several days at a time. Soon, former crew members spoke of diabolical powers; of magical manipulation of the weather and dark familiars aboard the Catellina. Nunez saw his fortunes diminishing at this point, until he was contacted by Sir Diarmait FitzGerald, an Irish merchant known for engaging in risky business ventures. Nunez and the Catellina became FitzGerald’s preferred couriers for high-risk or urgent cargoes. Nunez also took on trading journeys to uncharted waters for FitzGerald, trading along Africa’s west coast and into the far northern reaches of Scandinavia and Russia. Recently, some captains have noted the Catellina sailing briskly away from land from ports in southern Ireland and England, only to return months later. These captains cross themselves superstitiously when they tell these tales, for no captain without diabolical help ever sails away from land for that long.
